An Apology - October 23, 2008

Hi Friends,
A few weeks ago I wrote an inappropriate comment in this journal. I offended some readers and for that I deeply apologise. The comments I'm referring to have been taken down from the PHAT CHANTS site because it is not what this band is about. Please understand that my commentary did not in any way, shape, or form represent the feelings of PHAT CHANTS. I had a bad day that day and, being only human, I vented and I was wrong. Life is for beauty, light, and love. The most important part of this upcoming election is that everyone who is legally elligible to vote should vote. Whatever political leanings you have, they are valid. I sincerely apologise for any and all things I have written that can be interpretted in any negative fashion. Please forgive me and don't blame the others in PHAT CHANTS

The Continuing Travails of a Classic Rock Band in a Hip-Hop World - September 17, 2008

My fellow American PHAT HEADS. Ask not what you band can do for you,ask what you can do for your band! Buy our Cds, Go see us play, And, of course, HIRE US FOR YOUR HOLIDAY PARTYS! You've got to be sick of the dreary bands your boss hires each year (I won't mention any names, but you know who I'm talking about).
Summer is over and, wait a minute, let me wipe the tears from my eyes,I LOVE SUMMER IN SANTA CRUZ! PHAT CHANTS will be rocking the holiday season and we'll bring in 2009 with a clear message of HOPE! Our economy, and the world seems to be collapsing all around us, but just as Nero did while Rome burned, we will continue to play our guitars and rock. There are alot worse things to do at a time of crisis.Music will win the day and so will the people of this planet. There are much better days ahead if we all work together and love one another. That's all for now.ROCK ON

The Continuing Adventures of a Rock Band in a Hip-Hop World - April 10, 2008

Hi PHATHEADS! Iam going to have to change the title of my ravings. It seems Rock is not only withstanding the hip-hop onslaught, but it seems to be repelling it! ROCK WILL ONCE AGAIN RULE THE WORLD!!! Having said that, I am so glad that spring is sprung and summer is right around the corner. For all of you reading this who have never been to Santa Cruz, California (the original SURF CITY) I pity you. Santa Cruz is the most fun town on the coast of the most fun state. It also means the band is playing ALOT! We are also recording a new Cd at the end of April. Stay tuned for more info on that. We've learned so many new songs in the past couple of months that my head is spinning ( but I'm not throwing up split pea soup yet) All is good with PHAT CHANTS and remember, if the world starts bringing you down, there's always music to bring you back up! MUSIC IS EVERYTHING! that's all for now

The Further Adventures of a Rock Band in a Hip-Hop World: We're Back! - February 6, 2008

I've just returned from Lake Tahoe and I am very pleased the New York Football Giants beat the Cheating New England Patriots. I am a Rams Fan and when they beat us in 2002 it was bad, but to now find out that they cheated. THAT IS VERY DISTURBING!
Anyway, PHAT CHANTS is back and better than it's ever been. I am the only original member, but I am joined by a great guitar player and singer from Prunedale, Chris Stine on Lead. We also have Cliff Feldman on rhythm guitar/lead and he is also a wonderful vocalist. Fernando Ibanez is our drummer and percussionist, no vocals but a lot of great rhythms. Our first gig went great on New Years Eve and our first public debut was fantastic at Moss Landing Inn. The audience was huge and they seemed to like us. No beer bottles were thrown and they stayed until the end, so who can complain. The gigs are now beginning to roll in and, hopefully, we'll be somewhere near you soon. Check out our website to meet the new PHAT CHANTS and also find out when and where we are playing. Until then,
Later,

Earth Day Has Come and Gone... - April 23, 2007

and PHAT CHANTS hopes our planet has more than just a fat chance to survive. Actually, I have no doubt that the planet will survive, it's us carbon units I worry about.
Hey PHAT HEADS!
Do you realize that just when we thought the world was beginning to take global warming serious and there may be hope, the honey bees are in danger! This may seem trivial, but nearly 90% of all honey bees in the good ole' U.S. of A. have mysteriously disappeared. At first it was thought that a parasitic mite might be getting them, but NOOOOO!! Now it looks like it is...CELL PHONES and BLACKBERRIES!!! The signals these devices send off are interfering with the bees' navigational and communicational abilities. Scientists say that if we lose the bees, the human race will completely starve to death within four years! We don't know how to pollinate our plants, which in turn creates the food we need. Scientifically, bees aren't even supposed to be able to fly.I'm sure glad they can because they are the only way our planet gets pollonated. You remember "The Birds and The Bees" I just love that story.
So, when someone says to you,"Put down the phone and drive!" DO IT! Believe me, none of us are as important as we think we are.We do not need blue tooths stuck in our ears 24/7 We do not need to be "in touch" all the time. Take some time to be alone with your thoughts. You may find them interesting.I find mine a little scary.
Ane don't forget to DANCE YOUR ASS OFF to PHAT CHANTS.Check our calendar page for when we are near you and come and see us, but remember to TURN YOUR CELL PHONE OFF!!!!

It's Good to be King - January 15, 2007

On Martin Luther King Day, we should all strive to be King or at least be like him. Anyway, hi all you PHAT-HEADS. This year is the year of PHAT CHANTS, according to the Chinese calendar or did I just make that up? I'm so confused. The band has had some fantastic shows lately and huge crowds. They must have liked us.I didn't see any pitchforks or torches. We have learned a myriad of new songs and, obviously, a new word...myriad, which actually means "an indefinite amount" or "ten thousand".Honestly, we have not learned quite that many new songs, but I like to exagerate. We are doing some private venues in February and we will also be learning another myriad of songs, but we will return to the public eye in March, 2007. Unless someone books us before that.
Check out our photo gallery for some pics of us in concert and leave us a note in our guest book. Until next time, Hasta La Vista, Baby. Be safe and kind to each other.JD

The Holidays are Here! - November 24, 2006

Happy Thanksgiving to all you PHATHEADS! The band is taking a couple of weeks off and enjoying the holiday feasts with family and friends, as we hope you are too. Though PHAT CHANTS is taking time off, that does not mean we aren't playing. We are back in the studio rehearsing. We haven't had time to rehearse since last spring and, though we love playing for all of you, rehearsing is fun. We get to experiment and learn new material and stretch ourselves as musicians. We will return to the stage on Dec. 9 at Ocean Thunder in Monterey, Ca. and we will be adding 6 new songs, maybe more. These are tunes from Los Lobos and Robben Ford, and Stray Cats. THEY ROCK!!! Anyway, that's all for now.Enjoy your time with the ones you love and care about.Life is too short. We'll see you in December!

We're still stuck in a RAP world, but ROCK is doing just fine... - October 4, 2006

Hey Phat Heads,
It is October and it is still warm.Don't you just love California! Even more so Santa Cruz! PHAT CHANTS has been playing all over the Central Coast and finally we are back in Santa Cruz. This weekend, October 27 and 28, we are playing three gigs in two days! That's fine because we need the practice. We were in Santa Clara last weekend and it was a blast! The folks that come out to see us are so much fun.We love them. We now have PHAT CHANTS T-Shirts for sale in both color and black and white.Very stylish, if I do say so myself. Going into the winter, gigs seem to become fewer and farther apart, so we plan to return to the recoding studio of Mother Earth Records and cut our second Cd (actually our third, but we don't really count our Cd of cover tunes) Anyway that's all for now.Until next time, stay safe and we'll catch you on the other side.

Where did the summer go? - September 3, 2006

Hey Phat Heads, Was this not a fantastic summer? Of course it was! The weather in the Monterey Bay area has been near perfect and the people rock! PHAT CHANTS played at this place in Felton called The Trout Farm. It's in the redwood forest and it was quite the night. The mountain folks are really very kind. The next night we were at a place called Zelda's on the Beach and it was right on the beach in Capitola Village. The place was packed and everyone was up dancing from the very first note. Next week we venture to Half Moon Bay.Half Moon Bay is about 75 miles north of Santa Cruz on the coast of California. The place is called Old Princeton Landing and it is one of the best sounding rooms we've played. It has high ceilings and not much glass so it makes for a richer sound. Neil Young and Crazy Horse played there for five days straight a few years back. Any way, that's all for now. Until next time, be safe
Peace,

After a Slight Hiatus, the Adventure Continues - August 24, 2006

Well What's up Phat Heads? How ya' been? We've been great. Woody has returned from his Harley expedition into thw wild, uncharted land known only as Colorado. He is no worse for the wear. PHAT CHANTS played last weekend at The Mucky Duck in Monterey and it was fun! So many nice and generous people. I will never again say another bad thing about Monterey County. We met several folks from Utah, or should I say escapees. That's got to be the worse place to be from. Utah is a beautiful state. If only we could convince everyone living there to leave. This Friday night we are playing at The Moss Landing Inn next to The Whole Enchilada in Moss Landing. It is across the highway from the power plant so we shouldn't blow any fuses. We love to play there because it is such a radical bar.The people are crazy and bar is very unique. If you're around, try to drop in this Friday night, August 25, 2006 at 9pm. PHAT CHANTS is selling alot of Cds now so we should be driving Ferraris soon ( and I have a bridge to sell you too) Our posters have been postponed, but we may have cool t-shirts soon. While you're on this site, check out our guestbook page and leave us a massage or e-mail us or join our e-mail list.I promise we will read all of the messages and we will respond. Anyway, thats all for now.Until next time, be safe.

And Continues... - August 1, 2006

Well, well, well, It's the first of August and I just have to say,WHERE IS THE SUMMER GOING!!!! I can't believe Fall is almost here. PHAT CHANTS played last Friday at Chips N Salsa in Gilroy. We opened for Shane Dwight. For those who are unaware, Shane is a very popular blues guitarist and his band is very tight. It was the Garlic Festival and so vampires were scarce. The show went great and we are looking forward to playing the whole night there on Sept 1 (Friday) The band is on a small hiatus.Woody has ridden off into the sundet on his Harley and won't be back for a couple of weeks. He went to Colorado. He does these rides every year. They rejuvenate him and believe me he needs it. The band is still hoping to make it back into the recording studio to cut our second Cd in the fall.We are also going to be adding PHAT CHANTS shirts and hats to our sales dept. Oh yea, and a BIG POSTER!!! Not sure what it will look like, but knowing us it will be weird. Anyway, that's all for now. Until next time, be safe and I'll write at cha later.

The Adventure Conitnues... - July 24, 2006

Okay,Okay.I admit I was wrong. The folks at the Baja Cantina were GREAT!!!! We haven't had so much fun playing for such an appreciative audience in a long time. As for tipping, they were extremely generous and for that we are eternally grateful. Next Friday we travel to Gilroy and open for Shane Dwight at Chips 'N Salsa on 5th and Main St. in beautiful Gilroy (during the Garlic Festival).Though we will only play for an hour before Shane comes on, we are looking forward to meeting a whole new group of fans and friends there.
I decided I would start to give a little PHAT CHANTS history. I'm JD and I play Bass and write alot of the songs we play. I am originally from Los Angeles and my little claim to fame is that I played in the first Van Halen band. This was way before David Lee Roth.I was then in bands named Rain, Scarlett Jack, The System, Undercover Blonde and finally PHAT CHANTS. I founded the band and we have had alot of members come and go, but with Woody on rythmn guitar and Steve on Lead and Norm on drums, PHAT CHANTS is jsut right.Kinda like that three bears story.Anyway it is HOT!! today and I'm going to the beach.Anyone want to join me? Write at cha next week and feel free to e-mail us or make comments on our guest book page.We reall do read them and we will respond.Until next time, stay safe.

Adventures of a rock band in a hip-hop world - July 21, 2006

Hey PHATHEADS,
I'm JD and the bass player for PHAT CHANTS. I will be writing a little column here every week from now on. I like to call it,"The Adventures of a Classic Rock Band in a Hip-Hop World". Things are going pretty well for the band.We were just in the recording studio working as a back up band for a wonderful female vocalist. She is producing a documentary film and PHAT CHANTS will be in it.Our film debut? Are we ready for our close-up, Mr. DeMille? Anyway, we are excited about that. We are playing for the rich in Carmel Valley this Saturday night at the Baja Cantina. They tend to stay rich because they never tip bands very good. Hopefully PHAT CHANTS will be back in the studio in the fall of 2006 and we will start recording our second Cd of original material. I am really looking forward to it. Playing cover tunes just keeps us in gigs, but the true fun comes from creating your own music and having people actually enjoying it.What a concept. The band's been playing so much that we actually scheduled our next rehearsal in September.Such is life.
That's all for now, but I will continue to write these updates and feel free to contact us through the guestbook page on this site. I'll write at cha' later. Until then please pray for peace on earth.
Love Always,
JD
